Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD)

The Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) is only a suggestion of data model to be used by e.g. LIMS or catalogue developers. It only reflects the entities and relationships representing MIABIS attributes for biobank data sharing.

Most of the entities in the diagram are normally already part of a biobank LIMS system. The entities can have different names but the same meaning (e.g. a "Biobank" can be a "Lab" in a LIMS). Another case is when the MIABIS attributes are distributed among several entities in the LIMS database.

The table SampleCollection has "Diagnosis", "Donors" and "Samples"associated. Those three tables have aggregated data about diagnosis, donors and samples respectively in the sample collection. The same applies for the Study table which is related to "DiagnosisStudy", "DonorsStudy" and "SamplesStudy". In a LIMS it is probably implemented with several queries and there is no need for the tables containing aggregated data. In a web catalogue for instance, the aggregated tables should be included in the database design.
